CarPlay for motorhomes: which app actually works (2026)

By the Rovee team · Reviewed and updated 2026-06-16

The CarPlay gap
Most European motorhomes ship with a CarPlay-ready head unit (Fiat Ducato dash since 2019, Stellantis vans, Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter). The nav apps that understand motorhomes either paywall CarPlay behind a second subscription (Sygic), still don't ship it (CoPilot Caravan), or run only in part of Europe (HeadRoom — US/CA/UK only).
The shortlist that ships CarPlay today
Sygic Truck & Caravan (€29.99/year Premium+ for full CarPlay with voice; lifetime Premium has CarPlay without voice as of update 25.7); TomTom GO Expert (£1.99/month, but CarPlay UI doesn't expose dimensions); HeadRoom Nav ($4.99/month, US/CA/UK only). CoPilot Caravan is "coming soon" and has been for a year. Gabary status uncertain.
Where Rovee fits
Closed iPhone beta with CarPlay included, no separate tier. Founding-member access €17.99/year locked for life, capped at the first 1,000 spots. Adds the layers the others miss: dimension-aware routing, toll-cost prediction, vignette warnings, low-emission zones across Europe.

The motorhome you bought in the last few years already has a CarPlay-ready head unit. The navigation app you bought to go with it might not. This is the matrix — what ships CarPlay in 2026, where the paywalls are, and what the apps that understand motorhomes actually look like once they reach the dashboard.

The matrix

Five motorhome-aware nav apps with a CarPlay story, plus Rovee. Stoplight key: ✅ Ships · ⏳ "Coming" · ❌ Not available · ❓ Unconfirmed. Pricing in the currency the vendor publishes; EUR/GBP equivalents at the vendor checkout. All claims fact-checked 2026-06-16.

Sygic's subscription history — why the matrix has a footnote

The Sygic row needs context because the pricing it advertises today is the third version since 2021. The sequence, in order:

  1. 2021. Sygic discontinues the perpetual "lifetime Premium" tier and forces existing buyers onto a recurring subscription. The Trustpilot score (now 1.4/5 in the navigation category) is largely driven by the threads this generated.
  2. November 2023. CarPlay finally ships for Truck & Caravan, gated to active Premium. Sygic's own press release headline is "Sygic finally enables CarPlay" — the word "finally" is theirs.
  3. 2025 (update 25.0). CarPlay silently locks to a higher Premium+ tier. Lifetime Premium users lose CarPlay overnight.
  4. December 2025 (update 25.7). After community backlash, Sygic restores CarPlay to lifetime Premium — but strips voice guidance from the CarPlay UI for that tier. Full CarPlay with voice stays Premium+ exclusive at €29.99/year.

Practical read: the Sygic CarPlay row in the matrix above is the current rules. The rules have changed three times in three years. The motorhomefun threads from 2025–2026 read as a community that has stopped trusting tier names; the word "lifetime" doesn't carry the meaning it did pre-2021.

Why CarPlay matters differently for motorhomes

On a car, CarPlay is a convenience. On a motorhome it's the only way to read the screen at all. The phone is too small to glance at while driving a 7-metre rig; the dash unit is the only screen that meets eye-line. Apps that ship CarPlay but don't expose vehicle dimensions in that CarPlay UI (Sygic, TomTom GO Expert) put the driver in the position of trusting that the route was computed correctly with dimensions back when it was planned on the phone. Apps that don't ship CarPlay at all (CoPilot) leave the driver swinging the phone out of a holder mid-trip to change a destination, or worse, ignoring the better app and falling back to Google Maps on the dash.

The motorhomefun and r/UKMotorhoming threads keep landing on the same observation: the gap is not in raw routing quality. The motorhome-aware apps all handle dimensions on the phone. The gap is in how that intelligence reaches the dashboard. Until every app that knows your rig also speaks CarPlay properly, the driver is the integration layer.

What's not in this table — and why

Four apps frequently mentioned alongside motorhome navigation were considered for the matrix and excluded:

  • Park4Night, Camperstop, Searchforsites — campsite and aire directories, not turn-by-turn nav. They route through Apple Maps or Google Maps when you tap a pin, so their CarPlay story is whichever consumer app you have set as default. Useful apps; not part of the CarPlay-routing comparison.
  • Calimoto — sometimes flagged in CarPlay comparisons because it's CarPlay-native and subscription-based, but it's a motorcycle/motorbike route planner, not a motorhome app. The dimension model is wrong for a 7-metre rig.

Where Rovee fits

Rovee is the only app in the matrix that bundles CarPlay into one tier with no extra paywall, exposes rig dimensions in the CarPlay UI on the dashboard, and ships continental-European data (toll-cost prediction, vignette warnings, LEZ alerts) at the same time. The bet is straightforward: most European motorhome drivers want one app that runs through their existing CarPlay head unit, understands their rig, and warns them before the route runs into a fine.

Pricing is the load-bearing differentiator. Founding-member access is €17.99/year, locked for life as long as you stay subscribed, capped at the first 1,000 members. After the cap closes, standard pricing takes over at €29.99/year. There is no Premium+ tier behind CarPlay. There is no "lifetime" promise that gets sunset later. The pricing-stability promise is part of the product, not a marketing claim — see the Rovee vs Sygic Truck & Camper page for the full read on the 2021 bait-and-switch and why this matters.

Closed iPhone beta now. Public launch Tuesday July 7, 2026. Join the waitlist if you want a founding spot.

FAQ

Which iPhone nav apps support CarPlay for motorhomes in 2026?

Five apps ship a CarPlay build today: Sygic Truck & Caravan (paywalled behind Premium+, €29.99/year; lifetime tier restored Dec 2025 but voice guidance stripped); HeadRoom Nav ($4.99/month, US/CA/UK only — no continental Europe); TomTom GO Expert (£1.99/month, but the CarPlay UI does not surface vehicle dimensions); and Rovee (closed iPhone beta with CarPlay included in founding-member access). CoPilot Caravan does not ship CarPlay — developer App Store responses promised "coming in v11" in September 2025; v11.3 released April 2026 still without it. Gabary status uncertain — the iOS App Store listing did not surface CarPlay either way at fact-check.

What happened with Sygic's CarPlay pricing?

Three changes in three years. Sygic sunset its perpetual licence in 2021, forcing existing buyers onto subscription. CarPlay finally shipped for Truck & Caravan in November 2023, gated to active Premium licences. Update 25.0 in 2025 silently locked CarPlay to a higher Premium+ tier, removing it from lifetime Premium customers. Update 25.7 in December 2025 reversed after backlash — lifetime Premium got CarPlay back, but voice guidance was stripped from CarPlay for lifetime users. Full CarPlay with voice remains Premium+ exclusive at €29.99/year.

Why doesn't CoPilot Caravan support CarPlay yet?

CoPilot Caravan was the perpetual-licence answer for UK motorhome owners through the 2010s. The CarPlay gap has persisted across major releases. In September 2025 the developer responded to App Store reviews saying CarPlay would land in version 11. Version 11 shipped, and 11.3 in April 2026, still without it. December 2025 dev response cited Android Auto polish as the blocking item ahead of iOS rollout. As of fact-check no CarPlay build has shipped.

Does Sygic's CarPlay actually work for motorhomes?

Yes and no. Sygic Truck & Caravan does run on CarPlay once Premium+ unlocks it, but vehicle dimensions are not surfaced in the CarPlay UI — you set them in the phone app, and the route was computed before you got into the cab. The phone-side route includes the dimensions; the CarPlay-side display is more limited than the phone screen. Multiple motorhomefun threads flag this as "CarPlay half-works": the route obeys the dimensions, but you cannot change rig profile on the dashboard.

What about Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze on CarPlay?

They all run on CarPlay and they all route your motorhome as a car. None of them accept vehicle dimensions, none of them warn before a low bridge, low-emission zone, or vignette border. They are fine for short trips on familiar roads and dangerous on long European routes with unfamiliar regulations. The whole reason this page exists is that the apps that DO understand motorhomes do not all ship CarPlay, and the apps that ship CarPlay do not all understand motorhomes.
